Cowan, p. 580, has a long note on these vivid and entertaining observations on early San Francisco life, in the diggings and at the Missions, Honolulu, etc. Shaw recounts the appalling conditions in the California gold country and a following stay in Honolulu and its growing importance since the since the discovery of gold.
