[4072] Hazen, W. B. General. Our Barren Lands The Interior of the United States West of the 100th Meridian and East of the Sierra Nevadas . Cincinnati: Robert Clarke & Company , 1875. First Edition. Stiff Wraps. Very Good+ 53 pages. Original paper cover replaced with a facsimile. Pages are very clean, very nice condition. The Northern Pacific Railroad was built during the years of 1872-1873. During those years, the country east of the Sierra Mountains and west of the 100 Meridian (which runs through the middle of Texas and up through North Dakota,) had an above average amount of rainfall. This resulted in a false perception that the land was suitable for farming. Custer also noted and reported the abundant amount of grass and vegetation on his 1873 expedition. His reports along with the railroad's advertisements and lectures which were designed to sell land and entice settlers to move west, painted that section of the country as very productive and conducive to settlement. Hazen refutes these accounts and claims by providing lengthy reports from officers and civilians who had either passed through the country or who had lived there and experienced the normal seasons which received little rainfall.
