He was a prisoner of the Spaniards in Santa Fe in the 1820's. While serving as governor and superintendent of Indian affairs, he preferred charges against Carson for disobedience, insubordination, and cowardice in the presence of Indians. Meriwether eluded that Carson was overrated.
