Howard volunteered as a Union drummer boy at the age of 11, survived a skull fracture in a train accident, hunted and fished with Sioux and Shoshone throughout Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Northern Colorado and the Dakotas from age 22 to 27. He was on the Sioux campaign of 1876 with Crook's column. He was murdered in a rail yard at the age of 36.
